The beautifully landscaped people's park was created on the same site where Wernigerode hosted the State Garden Show in 2006. The park includes playground and recreation areas, a large number of themed gardens, a promenade, a lookout tower, a mineral gorge, an animal farm enclosure, as well as a miniature park called "Little Harz", bringing visitors from far and wide.
The playground areas with climbing rocks and equipment, sand pits and slides are an ideal destination for families with children in or visiting Harz. You may pat the animals in the small farm animal enclosures annexed to the 'Schafstall' what was previously the sheep stalls. School groups may take part in the "green classroom" projects, learning about environmental issues and about the flora, fauna, history and geology of the Harz mountains. These projects can be booked through the Harz Museum, Wernigerode.
The rose garden, zig-zag garden, sunken garden and ornamental flower garden are only a few examples of over 80 themed gardens in the public gardens. Enjoy the shade of stately trees, and the peaceful views which the park affords. You will be able to observe wildlife at any of the 5 ponds in the public gardens and, weather permitting, you can dip your toes in the man-made waterfall at Schreiber lake. From the artistically designed, concrete observation deck visitors have a beautiful view over the gardens, with its two different walking tracks, against the backdrop of the distant horizon of the Harz mountains.
The Gardens Restaurant is open daily to visitors during the park's opening times. During the winter months, however, changes may occur. The park restaurant is also an ideal venue for events and celebrations: wedding parties, corporate events, family gatherings, birthday parties, lunch for tour groups and more. Why not ask us for details.
