The R1 cycle route travels through 9 European countries from Boulogne-sur-Mer on the French Atlantic coast to St. Petersburg on the Baltic sea. Attracting many cyclists every year the 3500 kilometer cycle route passes through Wernigerode and travels along the northern edge of the Harz.
This section of the ride has few inclines and includes many interesting sights such as the monasteries at Ilsenburg, Drubeck and Blankenburg (Michaelstein). The monastery church in Michaelstein, Blankenburg is the first church to be found along the R1 cycle path. The route is well signposted and is identical to the D3 route that travels across Germany.
The Wernigerode tourism centre is also a service centre of the R1 European cycle path where we offer the following information and services:
-Bike repairs with specialised tools
-Air pump and repair kit
-Cycling maps, guides, bus and train timetables
-Reference list of bicycle repair shops for major repairs
-Help finding bicycle-friendly accommodation
-We also hold cyclist-friendly opening times
