Our town hall, "Benefactor fountain" and town square enclosed by half-timbered buildings must have been seen by just about every holiday maker in the Harz.
The town hall was originally established as a "Spelhus" (public house) acting as the court house as well as providing a venue for town dances, travelling artists and wedding celebrations. The town hall of Wernigerode is still used for civil weddings as well as housing the town municipal offices. The building with its council chambers and its attic can be viewed during a town hall tour where you will get to know the building expert Hilleborch.
In the town square in front of the town hall you will find the "Benefactor fountain". It was cast in the iron foundry in Ilsenburg in 1848 and was designed to commemorate people who have rendered outstanding service to the welfare of the town of Wernigerode and its people. For example in 1991 a plaque was attached commemorating Colonel Gustav Petri who in 1945 courageously saved the town of Wernigerode from destruction.
